Replace the mattress every ten years? That will not work for everyone. Once accustomed to a mattress, it is difficult to find the next suitable mattress. Nevertheless, the recommendation is that mattress must be replaced for no longer than ten years and actually within five years. The choice of a new mattress is not as simple as mattresses come in various types.

Mattress types is distinguished according to the composition

A mattress is an important part of the overall bed which consists of a bed, a spiral or slat, a mattress (or box-spring) and more pillows, sheets, blankets or a duvet and any protection components as flannel and mattress protector. There are different types of mattresses that are distinguished depending on the composition.

Polyether foam

The cheapest mattresses often are polyether foam mattresses. Obviously mattresses have the length and width of the bed, but the thickness of a foam mattress can be different. Also, the foam can contain more or less air, which is indicated by the SG (specific gravity). For example, a mattress with indication SG20 has a type of foam that weighs 20 kilograms per cubic meter. But such a mattress quickly loses quality and gives little support. There is a need for higher SG such as, for example, SG40 which has a much more durable quality with more resiliency. Incidentally, the SG does not indicate the stiffness or flexibility.

Cold foam

A so-called cold foam mattress is made from foam. Cold foam is produced in non-heated form molds. The name is derived from cold foam to cold cure molding. The foam has a high resiliency so that there is also called HR (high resilience) foams. Open cell foam breathes well and performs in a good way moisture. Cold foam mattresses labeled HR65 have a high quality. The foam is moreover flame retardant.

Memory foam

The memory foam mattresses are made of visco-elastic polyurethane foam. This foam is compressed so that it adapts to the body contours efficiently. Those adaptations provide no pressure points, which cause that the sleeper has to change posture, and therefore make them sleep less deeply. there are also memory foam mattresses with little support.

Foams

Although foam is a natural product, it is also produced by chemical means. A foam mattress contains at least 40 percent of natural foam may be already called, according to European standards, foam mattress. The big difference between natural and synthetic foam is the porosity.

Innerspring

When mattresses with springs are comprised, the inner portion of the mattress having a core of metal springs. The top and bottom of the core is covered with comfort layers which, for instance, may consist of HR foam, cotton, horse hair, foam or wool.

Pocket Spring

A mattress with pocket spring core consists of a large number of springs which are individually wrapped in a material of fabric. Parts of the mattress may additionally contain springs of different wire thicknesses, creating a high adaptation of the contours of the body. A pocket spring mattress breathes excellent compared to some other types of mattress.

Fibre

Mattresses with vegetable or animal fiber are much more common. This kind of mattresses is filled with kapok, straw and sea grass as plant materials and camel hair, camel, horse hair and feathers and animal materials.

Box-spring

A special kind of mattress is a box-spring. A box-spring has spring core which is combined with an undercarriage. The springs consist of metal spiral springs which are covered with foam. A box spring thus consists of a chassis, springs and pillow-top mattress. The empty space between the springs creates extra ventilation.

Water bed

Another special type of mattress is a mattress that is filled with water. A water mattress follows the contours of the body and provides a good pressure distribution. A water mattress usually consists of a number of compartments. The mattress should be heated to body temperature because the body is unable to get used to the temperature of large amount of water. This problem does not occur with other types of mattress.

Dimensions of mattresses

The dimensions of a mattress (and thus also of the bed) are are different. While old bedsteads width for a single bed is 70 or 80 centimeters, this was widened to 90 centimeters in modern models. For a double bed, the width is from 120 to 200 centimeters. The standard width is 190 centimeter which is extended to 200 or 210. A special size for tall people goes up to 220 centimeters.
